The Department of Human Services has announced changes to face-to-face services for Ryde residents.
Medicare services from the North Ryde Service Centre within Macquarie Centre on Herring Road will relocate to the much larger Ryde Service Centre at 19–27 Devlin Street from Monday 14 March 2016.
Department of Human Services General Manager Hank Jongen said bolstering Medicare services in the existing Ryde Service Centre will provide the local community with access to the same level of Medicare and Centrelink services in one convenient, coordinated location.
“Moving services from North Ryde to Ryde reflects changes in the way customers are now choosing to claim their Medicare rebate,” Mr Jongen said.
“There has been a drop in the number of people visiting our service centres, including North Ryde Service Centre, which has observed a 38 per cent reduction in daily foot traffic over the past two and a half years.
“This is largely due to the move away from cash rebates for Medicare services in 2012, and the growing number of people claiming their rebate electronically at their doctor’s surgery.”
Mr Jongen encouraged North Ryde residents to claim routine Medicare rebate items straight from the doctor’s surgery, adding the City of Ryde is well-serviced with practices that offer this facility.
“The best way to claim a Medicare rebate is directly at the GP, and nationally, more than 96 per cent of all Medicare claims are now lodged electronically, with most via the point of service,” Mr Jongen said.
“Many residents don’t even have to make the trip to a service centre, and I’d encourage them to check out the range of digital services that enable them to do much of their government business where and when it suits them.
“For instance, they can make a claim for common rebate items online through myGov and the Department’s Express Plus mobile apps.
“Staff at Ryde will always be available to provide face-to-face services to people who require more intensive or personalised support.”
John Alexander MP added: “This centralisation strategy is designed to create convenient one-stop shops where people can access all of their Federal Government services in one visit. This is the continuation of a policy that commenced under the Gillard Labor Government.”
The Ryde Service Centre on Devlin Street is open Monday to Friday, from 8.30am to 4.30pm.
