John Alexander MP re-elected in Bennelong

John Alexander MP has expressed his deep appreciation to the people of Bennelong following his re-election as Member of Parliament for Bennelong with an increased majority of support from the local community.

He also praised his six opponents, particularly emphasising the good nature of the contest and the cordial relations between each team.

“I am deeply honoured that again more than 50% of Bennelong voters have expressed their trust in me by writing a 1 next to my name on their ballot paper,” Mr Alexander said.

After preferences this support grows to 60% which equals the result achieved by John Howard when he won government in 1996 (and Bennelong included Lane Cove and Hunters Hill). The swing in Bennelong on Saturday was the highest two-party swing towards the Liberal Party in NSW and the third highest in Australia.

“As this result goes against the national trend it must be seen as a clear vote of confidence in the achievements I have delivered in Bennelong in recent years,” Mr Alexander continued.

“These achievements include over $520 million in federal funding for infrastructure projects, education grants, health facilities and road safety improvements across the region. These combine with the successful and ongoing Bennelong Village Business, Bennelong Gardens, and Bennelong Schools’ projects.

“Bennelong has the fastest growing economy on the east coast of Australia, and a booming housing market that must be protected to further grow the wealth of our region.

“I am determined to continue my work and to achieve even more for all residents of our Bennelong community over the next three years. And based on this work I hope to continue to receive the support from local residents and businesses as our region goes from strength to strength into the future.

Mr Alexander also paid tribute to his many supporters, praising the hard work of everyone who had helped on the campaign and the unified team that had made this result possible.
