Roselea Public School has sketched local MP John Alexander as part of their art classes, after a tweeted sketch of JA as Beaker from the Muppets caught the politician’s eye.
After an exchange on twitter, JA was invited to the school to sit for a more realistic picture.
He visited there on Thursday and was very impressed by the skills of the students. They also intend to make a larger, abstract portrait for him to hang in Parliament House Canberra.
John Alexander MP said: “The students at Roselea have excellent skills and many of their sketches really looked like me. A big thank you should go to their excellent teacher Ms Isaacs for her initiative and promotion of their incredible artistic skills.”
“I look forward to seeing the abstract picture when it is finished. I’ve never been portrayed abstractly before, but I feel it could only be flattering.”
When the students asked if JA had ever been sketched before, he revealed that he once sat for a portrait to be entered into the Archibald prize.
“It didn’t win,” he admitted. “In fact, I don’t think it made the final shortlist to be hung in the gallery.”
