River Walk improves access for City of Ryde

RESIDENTS of Gladesville will now have better access to foreshore parks along the Parramatta River with today’s opening of the $1.79 million Ryde River Walk project.

Assistant Minister to the Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said the Australian Government was delighted to have partnered with state and local government to deliver the project.

“The Australian Government has contributed $1.1 million toward the construction of the Ryde River Walk project. This is part of our commitment to providing long term improvements in social and economic infrastructure for communities across Australia,” Mr McCormack said.

Federal Member for Bennelong John Alexander, who was at the opening, said the project will improve access to the foreshore for people of all abilities and provide improved recreational opportunities.

“The Ryde River Walk will provide residents with a recreational trail between Bill Mitchell Park and Looking Glass Bay connecting existing foreshore parks along the Parramatta River, through the construction of new stairs, non-slip footpaths and terrestrial boardwalks,” Mr Alexander said.

New South Wales Member for Lane Cove Anthony Roberts said the project would improve the community’s enjoyment by providing better public access.

“The local community will now be able to enjoy the unique attractions along the Parramatta River, including educational opportunities with reference to the local Aboriginal heritage, flora and fauna,” Mr Roberts said.

Mayor of City of Ryde Jerome Laxale said the project was fantastic for local and surrounding communities.

“The Ryde River Walk connects existing foreshore parks and provides an important link in a regional system of recreation trails that connect with adjoining Councils along the Parramatta River,” Cr Laxale said.

The Ryde River Walk was funded with $1.1 million from the Australian Government, $235,000 from the NSW Government and $455,000 from the City of Ryde.
