The federal member for Bennelong, John Alexander and the State member for Ryde, Victor Dominello, are petitioning The City of Ryde Council to accept federal government funding to install CCTV cameras in the Eastwood Shopping Precinct.
Mr Alexander said, “the Korean Chamber of Commerce along with the Chinese business community in Eastwood, the Eastwood Chamber of Commerce and local residents are very concerned about safety in parts of the Eastwood shopping precinct.
“Unfortunately, some criminal incidents in the area go unreported, as being a victim of crime is perceived to be an embarrassment in some communities.
“The installation of these cameras would firstly be a deterrent to criminals and secondly increase the chance of police catching perpetrators of crime in the area,” said Mr Alexander.
“I have followed through on an election promise to secure $200,000 in funding to have these cameras installed in the area. I urge Ryde Council to act in the best interests of the community and have these cameras installed.
Council is investigating the feasibility of installing and maintaining CCTV cameras in the area, due to report at the end of May.
Mr Alexander has written to council advising that the Attorney-General’s Department requires City of Ryde Council to submit a proposal setting out how they will deliver the funding commitments by 2pm, Thursday 12th June.
“This is a matter of public safety and I urge Council to act quickly to secure funding to install these cameras – something that is supported by so many key community groups,” said Mr Alexander.
