Media Release: John Alexader sworn in as Member for Bennelong

5th April 2018

After a hard-fought by-election campaign, John Alexander MP was once again sworn in as the Federal Member for Bennelong, at Parliament House on Monday, 5 February 2018.

John said he was deeply humbled that the people of Bennelong have once again placed their faith in him to be their representative in Canberra. “It is a real honour to serve as the Member for Bennelong,” Mr Alexander said. “I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported me, backed our campaign, and voted for me as Bennelong’s representative. Again, I apologies to everyone for the inconvenience caused by the by-election.” “During the by-election, the Labor Party threw everything at Bennelong – volunteers were trucked in, unions were mobilised and they even parachuted in a candidate. However, the voters of Bennelong rewarded the party that has cared for their community over the years.”

Mr Alexander again expressed his appreciation to his many supporters. “Thank you to everyone who volunteered and helped out during the campaign. Your hard work and dedication ensured our unified team’s success on Election Day,” Mr Alexander said. “Thank you also to my fellow candidates for the spirited campaign.”

Addressing Parliament, Mr Alexander shared the concerns of his constituents regarding the current state of political debate. “The major parties must take responsibility for our declining fortunes. We must replace destructive debate with constructive engagement. Ultimately, victory shouldn’t go to the greatest slanderer, it should go to the team that presents the best vision for Australia. Not a competition of insults, but a competition of ideas.” Mr Alexander said.

Mr Alexander hasn’t wasted any time in getting back into the swing of things, eager to continue the work he has been doing over the last 8 years. “I will continue to be Bennelong’s voice in Canberra, advocating our community’s concerns on issues such as housing affordability, over-development, congestion and cost of living pressures,” Mr Alexander said. “I am looking forward to serving Bennelong for many years to come”_PB13258
